Former Employee Jailed for Cybercrime After Deleting Company Servers
Steffan Needham, a 36-year-old from the Bury district of Greater Manchester, has been sentenced to two years in prison following his dismissal for poor performance.
After being fired, Needham stole the credentials of a former colleague and accessed the company’s Amazon Web Services accounts, deleting a total of 23 servers in a single session.
The impact was devastating: the digital marketing company lost several contracts with transport companies, suffered estimated losses of €580,000, and much of the deleted data could not be recovered.
During the nine-day trial, Needham pleaded not guilty to two counts under the Computer Misuse Act, as well as charges for unauthorized access to confidential data and for its modification. He was nevertheless convicted on all counts.
According to local media, the company confirmed his dismissal was due to extremely poor job performance.
